Joe Borja

photo of Joe BorjaHello! My name’s Joe Borja. I’m a third-year mathematics and computer science double major, from Woodbridge, VA (703!).  Coming into college I really had no idea as to what I wanted to do in life.  What I love about UVA though is that it has provided me the opportunity to study just about everything I want, from philosophy to archaeology and African drumming.   With the Echols program I was able to pursue all of my intellectual interests, without the gen. ed. restrictions.  The academic environment here is great, and you will be able to focus on studying things you care about with similarly motivated individuals.  Just recently I was awarded the John B. Adger Scholarship for academic merit.  No matter what you want to do, you will feel very prepared for life after you graduate. My current plans are to attend graduate school to get a PhD in applied mathematics.

Outside of academics there is so much do… too much to do.   With hundreds of clubs ranging from ballroom dancing to snowboarding, there are so many things to try.  You have the opportunity to really leave your comfort zone and do something crazy and exciting; one of my fondest memories will be joining the Organization of Young Filipino Americans and participating in their cultural dances and events.

Without a doubt, coming to UVA is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.  The people you meet here will change your life and your experiences will be unforgettable.  Entering my last year here, you would think that I’d have seen it all, but I’m still discovering new things every day.
